    Set in the parks and forests surrounding Pittsburgh, the Backpacking Adventure Camp provides a comprehensive introduction to backpacking and wilderness survival. Designed for those eager to explore the outdoors, this program blends skill-building with adventure, creating an immersive experience that fosters confidence and self-sufficiency. Throughout the week, participants will learn essential backpacking techniques, including water filtration, fire-building, land navigation, and wood carving. They will also have opportunities to engage with professionals in the outdoor industry, gaining insight into careers in environmental conservation, outdoor leadership, and adventure guiding. The program culminates with an overnight backpacking trip in Quebec Run Wilderness Area, where campers will apply their newly acquired skills in a real-world setting. All necessary gear and meals for the overnight trip are provided, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for exploration and learning.

    Set against the backdrop of Pittsburgh’s rivers and the Youghiogheny River, the Water Sports Adventure Camp introduces participants to a variety of paddle sports while fostering an appreciation for aquatic environments. The program begins with foundational instruction in canoeing and kayaking on calm waters, allowing participants to develop confidence and technique before progressing to moving water challenges. Midweek, campers will take part in a conservation initiative in collaboration with the Mountain Watershed Association, engaging in a river cleanup that emphasizes environmental responsibility. The latter part of the week is dedicated to whitewater paddling, culminating in a guided rafting trip on the Lower Youghiogheny River. The program concludes with an overnight camping experience in Ohiopyle State Park, where participants will continue to refine their paddling skills and enjoy a night immersed in nature. All technical and camping gear is provided, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.

  • Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 1

    $250

    This five-day outdoor skills program takes participants through some of the region’s most diverse landscapes, including Forbes State Forest, Jennings Environmental Center, Moraine State Park, Ohiopyle, and Breakneck Climbing Area. The curriculum combines wilderness survival training with rock climbing and rappelling, offering a balanced experience of adventure and practical skill development. Participants will learn essential survival techniques such as fire-starting, first aid, shelter-building, fishing, and plant identification, while also gaining hands-on experience with climbing equipment and techniques. Throughout the week, environmental stewardship and team-building exercises encourage a deeper connection to nature and personal resilience. The camp concludes with an overnight excursion, where participants will apply their survival knowledge and advance their climbing skills in a natural rock-climbing setting. All technical equipment, including camping and climbing gear, is provided.

  • All pick up and drop off will be in the Point Breeze Neighborhood, Pittsburgh, PA. Transportation will be provided to all other locations. A guardian must sign their child in and out unless a walking waiver has been signed by the guardian. 

  • Food for Thursday night dinner and Friday breakfast and lunch are included. 

  • No, all participants will always wear life jackets in the water, but participants will need to be comfortable with getting wet and being in water. Experience swimming is encouraged.

  • No, no experience is required for any of our camps. However, please be sure to review the Essential Eligibility Criteria and Week Specific Requirements prior to registration on our registration page. By registering, you are confirming these Criteria and Requirements. 

  • Camp is 5- days long, Monday-Friday. Camp begins at 9am and ends at 4pm Monday-Wednesday. The overnight trip will begin Thursday at 9am and end Friday at 4pm. 

  • All activities will continue as planned, apart from outdoor climbing. This event will be adjusted to work around weather and/or become an indoor event at ASCEND Point Breeze. 

  • All participants must have an OIC Waiver, any outside partner waivers, a health form, and a transportation waiver. 

  • No, The OIC can provide all necessary gear, apart from suitable water clothing and water shoes for Water Sports Camp. If you would like to purchase gear for the week, we are always happy to provide suggestions!

  • Yes! We do not repeat weeks of camp, and each camp is different, and we will ensure the most adventure possible.
